Roads, Driving and Car Hire in Corsica…You will probably need to hire a car in Corsica and you can find the best place to pick it up on one of the following tables. Car hire at airportsTable 1 shows the airports. You will find a Europcar and a Hertz at all the airports, and a Sixt at Ajaccio and Bastia. If you book through Corsica-Isula or Holiday Autos, you’ll probably find you get the car from Hertz or Europcar in any case. Click on the ticks to find out more:

If you enjoy driving, you’ll love driving in Corsica. But it’s a rare enthusiast who will take his or her own car on a car ferry from England or Ireland, drive down through France, then get a ferry across the Mediterranean only to face a further drive in Corsica. Most travellers these days prefer to fly (See "Getting there" page, link above) and then hire a car when they get there. Driving conditionsMost of the main roads in Corsica are of excellent quality, and there have been dramatic improvements in recent years. Having said that, don’t expect motorway conditions in the interior. Frequent rockfalls, goats, hairpin bends, and vertical drops on one side are amongst the hazards. Visitors to the island frequently underestimate the time taken to get from A to B. It will take you more time than you think! Finally, a tip (from bitter experience): if you are set on driving all the way round the coast, go clockwise. That way, you’ll leave most of the vertical drops to the people coming in the other direction! |
Some of the most fabulous views, the most fascinating villages (like Speloncata, above) and the best of Corsica’s beaches can only be accessed by car. |
