Beaches

Corsica offers, quite simply, the best beaches in Europe.  They are kept immaculately clean, and they range from totally deserted to Riviera chic.

The authorities have managed to control development so that the ugly overcrowding present in much of the Mediterranean is just not present in Corsica.

Private beaches are still a rarity and even in the busier resorts at the height of summer, you can nearly always find somewhere to park nearby.  And where bathers and divers are excluded - as is the case in the underwater nature reserve of Scandola in the West - there is usually a pretty good reason for it.

As with most Mediterranean destinations, it is possible to swim, sail and windsurf nearly everywhere you are likely to go.  But what makes Corsica’s coastline so special is the quality and clarity of the water.  Corsica’s coastlines are a Mecca for divers.

If you want to spend some of your holiday with your head below the water, either as a diver or with a face mask and snorkel, you will probably be heading for the southern tip of the island around Bonifacio, or anywhere on the west coast (try the Calvi area, Propriano or Ajaccio).

If you like cliffs, caves and spectacular views, you have a good deal of choice.  The cliffs at Bonifacio are famous for their spectacular ribbed structure and huge overhangs.

Finally, if you like long, gradually shelving sandy beaches with an emphasis on sun and swimming, you may prefer east coast resorts like Ghisonaccia - where Eurocamp have two sites - but don’t forget to protect yourself with a high factor sunscreen: Corsica can be deceptively hot.
